what i wore this week {why I do wiww edition}

what i wore this week is a segment of the blog that I like for lots of little reasons...you might be wondering, is fashion really important in the grand scheme of things? In any scheme of things? Nah. I don’t really think so.

But for some reason, I enjoy putting outfits together, and the what I wore this week series keeps me motivated to get dressed every day for my family {which is something that feels extremely important after you had to answer the door at noon and you were still bra-less in your old yoga pants and ratty night shirt! eek!}. I also like to do it because I think it’s fun to share what kinds of deals you can find at the thrift store!

Like this: I found this necklace, earrings, floral top, and jeans at Goodwill for $13 total. The sweater was from Target {$17} and the shoes were my fave neutral shoes ever {$20}!

The two individual items were more expensive than all the others combined!  I so love the thrift store!

So when it comes to clothing and the role it has in our life as believers, here’s what I think: we women have the job of helping to provide coverings for our family, and I believe God does put in us design and creativity and an appreciation for colors and beauty and orderly things.

I’m often reminded of this verse in Proverbs 31 when I think about the whole getting dressed thing:

She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet
. v. 21

It’s not something we should worry or be anxious about-  what we wear has no value in itself, and all things will be provided by the Lord in His time- but I think we are to be the nurturers of the family, making sure that those in our care are dressed and protected from the elements, while being wise stewards with the money God has given us at the same time.

And I can’t seem to discount the scarlet part either- she dresses her family in fine, quality garments. That is so interesting to me. It’s not wrong for me to spend money to wear Ralph Lauren clothes, or to buy a nice pair of leather shoes. If I buy nice things that will last my family many years, I’m being a good steward with the money I have been given. And they were good enough to protect them from the weather- so they weren’t full of holes or old and thin.

IMG_8361

{a gap clearance sweater from last year, $8, and a $4 self-tailored skirt from Ann Taylor Loft, paired with an old pair of Steve Madden shoes and a $1 vintage belt!}

IMG_8376

I guess the question is, if I’m buying loads of scarlet clothes just because they give the appearance of wealth, what is the good in that? Or if I’m throwing away money on clothes I’ll only wear a few times {high-end or low-end}, what purpose does that serve?

Does that make sense?

It’s not that I’ve got it. I don’t think it’s wrong to buy new clothes at all. But have you ever felt guilty for buying something you didn’t really need? I have. Even when it’s only $3 from Goodwill. I like shopping and finding new deals, but lately I’ve been trying harder to make more with what I’ve already got {which is plenty!}. I’ve been trying to remix a lot of my clothes these days! :)

I think it’s fun to buy unique pieces to work with your neutral investment pieces. You can remix them, over and over again- making the best of the money you’ve been given.

I’m a huge fan of a Gap cardigan sweater and a good pair of American Eagle jeans: {probably the foundation of 65% of my outfits ;) }IMG_8404

Paired with a $3 Goodwill floral top and an $8 pair of GW patent leather heels, the neutrals work their magic, I think.

And I think it’s a good thing to find clothes that can be resold when they aren’t used any more. Finding nicer clothing will give you a greater chance of resale- which means you could get dressed for a fraction of the price!

I love to buy things on eBay or at the thrift store and resell them for what I paid or more. Like this Fossil bag:

IMG_8340

Whether you resell or buy on sale, or buy thrifted clothes- it doesn’t matter. It’s not about the clothes. Life is more than clothing, and a woman’s life doesn’t consist in the abundance of her possessions. But that’s good news, isn’t it?? :D

The only thing that really matters in this life on earth is what you believe- and what you do with it.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:16-17

What do you believe in? What do you hope to accomplish in your days here in this place?

  1. Completely agree! It's not wrong to dress nice or buy new clothes as long as it doesn't become your focus, your idol. It's all about keeping things in perspective!

  5. New follower here! And I can relate soo much to the "bra-less in your old yoga pants" mornings. I am the worst at getting dressed and when I do it's jeans and a hoodie. Thanks for the inspiration to put a bit more thought into what I wear. And I love (LOVE) Goodwill! Where else can you get a pair of Seven jeans for $6? God Bless!

  9. Mandy, thank you for this post. I have struggled with including "fashion" posts on my blog as well because I want the blog to glorify God first and foremost. It's easy to see how my other kinds of posts glorify Him or glorify serving family, etc - but the fashion ones were just "fun" for me. You worded very well why I also do WIWW. I mix and match my old things with "new to me" (secondhand or super great deal) clothes. This glorifies the idea of financial responsibility, right? I actually made a little banner on today's WIWW post with that little disclaimer - just in case people were wondering.

  10. I have been struggling with WIWW...this week! I started thinking maybe I was doing it out of vanity and to draw attention to myself. So I talked to my husband about it and he said "I'm glad you do it...you've been putting more thought into what you wear and you've been doing your hair more often and you've been so creative." So thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight!

Also...if we are wise stewards with the money we've been given and buy clothes that are nice, we can donate them and bless the poor with something that ISN'T stained, ripped, faded, etc.

  11. Great post! Love your outfits!! I have that Target striped cardigan and haven't branched out beyond a tan or cream tank top under it. Love the floral top you found that complements it so well! Looks so cute on you!!

  12. Loved this post! I have struggled with the idea of what is right and wrong with purchasing clothing, what I should be using the money towards, guilt over purchases, quality vs. quantity... It becomes a labyrinth when you lose your focus.

  14. Best jeans ever! I always think that just because I'm a mommy (or maybe because, since I want to be a role model for small one) that I don't have to 'give up' dressing decently :-)

  19. Love all your outfits, you look fabulous. I have been on a mission to "get dressed" more, rather than finishing out the day in my tennis clothes just because that's what I started out it... I have a 12 year old daughter, and I think it's important for her to see her mother take pride in herself. Newly following you, come see me some time! Orangies Attic

  25. Recently started following your blog, and I just LOVE this post! I am a junior high counselor at my church, and this is something I always teach my girls =) I believe it is important to not obsess over your appearance or try to cover and change all of the "flaws" we see. But taking care of yourself and taking a measure of pride in your appearance is a way to cherish how God created you! Your choices in fashion are a way of expressing the personality He gave you too!

    Love being a girl =)

  35. Awesome outfits. This series has definitely made me think a lot about actually making the effort to use what God has given me. I, too, have been a Goodwill girl for a long time. I love finding entire (and super cute outfits) for super cheap, but I never seem to wear them enough. And yes, it is quite embarrassing when the door bell rings at 1:00 p.m. and the thought that goes through your head is, "put your arms across your chest and hopefully they won't notice the pajama bottoms ;P. I absolutely love P31 and strive to live it everyday so thank you so much for your encouragement. :) Just for fun, I hope you can come do our Monthly Memories friskpartyoffive.blogspot.com. Just a way to recap our memories for the month. :)

  36. Thank you for writing this. I absolutely agree that we care about clothes in the sense that we should be good stewards, even when it comes to fashion... not because our clothes in and of themselves have any eternal value. And I love the print mixed with the stripes in your first outfit!

  37. Love this idea!! Although I'm not currently blogging, when I do rejoin you all - I may share this journey as I take you up on this challenge. I've been the mom not "dressed" for the day, opening the door at noon to the UPS guy in my sweats and hair in shambles! Hair... that's mostly why I'm commenting - girl - your hair is almost like mine, color & all (but I can't get my hair to grown that long)... but I'm sure you can imagine what I mean when I say "pulling my hair up," and it still looking like it's in shambles ;-)
